Ingredients

  • 60 ml bourbon 2 oz; Maker's Mark recommended
  • 15 ml Benedictine liqueur ½ oz
  • 15 ml Monin Winter Spice syrup ½ oz
  • orange wedge + zest
  • 1 sage leaf
  • dry sage optional, for smoking the glass
  • large ice sphere one large sphere, or large ice cubes

Instructions

  • In a shaker, add the bourbon, Benedictine, syrup, and 2-3 ice cubes. Shake well.
  • Prepare a chilled rocks glass.
  • Optionally, smoke the glass with dry sage: place a few leaves on a cutting board and light them with a small torch or a matchstick, then set the chilled glass over them upside down and let the smoke fill the glass. This step is optional, but it adds to the experience.
  • Flip the glass, add the large ice sphere or cube, then pour the cocktail from the shaker through a strainer into the glass.
  • Add an orange wedge and garnish with orange zest and a sage leaf.

Notes

Benedictine is made with honey, so this drink is vegetarian rather than vegan; for a vegan version, swap in a honey-free herbal liqueur. Mix fresh and serve right away over a single large ice cube.
