Chocolate Blackberry Smoothie
This chocolate banana blackberry smoothie is a creamy, naturally sweet drink that tastes like dessert but is made from just four whole-food ingredients: ripe banana, frozen blackberries, carob powder and water. It blends in under a minute, contains no added sugar and no actual chocolate, which makes it a great breakfast or a wholesome snack for both adults and kids.
Really, this is one of the best smoothies I ever made. The trick here is carob powder, which I love. It gives you that deep, chocolatey flavour without any cocoa, and it is naturally sweeter, so you do not need to add a single spoon of sweetener. Hope you’ll like it as much as I do!

The four ingredients, and why each one matters
Because this is a four-ingredient smoothie, each one does real work, so it is worth choosing them well. A fully ripe banana, with brown speckles on the peel, is the base. It brings the natural sweetness and the thick, creamy body, so the riper it is, the better the result. Frozen blackberries give you the deep berry colour, a gentle tartness that balances the sweetness, and the chill that makes the smoothie taste like soft-serve instead of plain juice.
Carob powder is the ingredient that surprises people. It tastes chocolatey but it is not cocoa, it is naturally sweet and caffeine-free, which is part of why it suits kids so well. If you do not have carob on hand, raw cacao or unsweetened cocoa powder works as a swap, though both are more bitter, so you may want a little extra banana or a date to balance them. The water is simply there to loosen everything to a drinkable consistency.
How to get the texture just right
Add the water gradually rather than all at once. Start with the amount in the recipe, blend, then add a splash more only if it is thicker than you like. This way you control the consistency instead of ending up with something watery. Using a frozen banana along with the frozen blackberries gives you a spoonable smoothie-bowl texture, while a fresh banana keeps it pourable.
Blend for a good 30 to 60 seconds, until the blackberry seeds are broken down and the mixture looks uniform and glossy with no visible specks of carob powder. If your blender struggles, blend the banana and water first to create a smooth liquid, then add the frozen berries and carob and blend again. Serve right away, as the recipe says, because smoothies are at their best when freshly blended and cold.
Easy ways to make it your own
The recipe is naturally vegan and dairy-free as written, but it takes well to small tweaks. Swap the water for a plant milk such as oat or almond if you want it richer and creamier. Add a tablespoon of nut butter for extra staying power, a handful of spinach for a hidden greens boost, or a few ice cubes if you prefer it even colder. A pinch of cinnamon or a teaspoon of ground flaxseed are other simple additions that do not change the chocolatey character.

Make-ahead and storage
This smoothie is best enjoyed the moment it is blended, while it is cold and the texture is at its creamiest. If you do need to get ahead, you can prep a grab-and-go freezer pack: portion the sliced banana, blackberries and carob powder into a freezer bag, then tip the contents straight into the blender with water when you are ready. For a short hold, keep a blended smoothie in a sealed jar in the fridge for up to a day and give it a quick stir or re-blend before drinking, since natural separation is normal.

Frequently Asked Questions
Yes. It is made only from ripe banana, frozen blackberries, carob powder and water, all of which are plant-based, so it is naturally vegan and dairy-free. There is no milk, yogurt, honey or any animal product in the recipe.
No, there is no chocolate or cocoa in the base recipe. The chocolatey flavour comes from carob powder, which tastes similar to chocolate but is naturally sweet and caffeine-free. If you prefer, you can swap the carob for raw cacao or unsweetened cocoa powder.
Yes, but the texture will be thinner and less chilled. Frozen blackberries give the smoothie its thick, soft-serve consistency and cold temperature. If you only have fresh berries, freeze the banana first or add a few ice cubes to keep it creamy.
Raw cacao or unsweetened cocoa powder are the closest swaps. Both are more bitter than carob, so you may want to add a little extra banana or a soft date to balance the flavour, since carob is naturally sweeter on its own.
Control the texture with the liquid and the temperature of the fruit. For a thicker, spoonable smoothie use a frozen banana and add the water gradually, just a splash at a time. For a thinner, pourable drink use a fresh banana and a little more water or plant milk.
It is best blended and served right away while cold and creamy. To prep ahead, freeze the banana, blackberries and carob together in a bag and blend with water when you want it. A blended smoothie keeps in a sealed jar in the fridge for up to a day; stir or re-blend before drinking.

I love chocolate and I love blackberries, so this recipe was just perfect for me! So tasty!
Thank you! Glad you liked it!
